In conversation with… Gisette Matvosian, building design student

What does young designer Gisette Matvosian love most about studying a Diploma of Building and Design? We chatted to her too find out.

Gisette Matvosian believes creating new designs is the “greatest feeling.” Passionate and engaged, she has always had a clear-cut career path that lead her down the building and design route.

Currently studying a Diploma of Building Design at Hornsby TAFE, Gisette has always been fascinated by the intricacies building projects- from design conception to the finished product. We chatted to her to find out what she enjoys most about the process.

STUDYING

I chose to study a Diploma of Building Design because I have always had such a great interest in homes and how they are designed. I have always visited open homes and display homes, and admired how how the design of each home ‘flows.’

When I finished school I knew I wanted to get into drafting and home design straight away- real estate even- anything involving houses! I started studying engineering drafting and later moved into building design and residential drafting.

FEELING INSPIRED

I get my inspiration from designs I see online and in person. My love for building design comes from what I observe- I see what I love and that becomes my inspiration! Process wise, I’ll look at a building and make note of the structures I find interesting and aesthetically pleasing, cataloguing it for later inspiration.

KNOWLEDGE BUILDING

From day one at TAFE I was learning a broad knowledge of building, construction and design. These themes tie in with other aspects of building, like environment, sustainability, construction method, contract agreements and essentially everything from the start of a building project to the end.

I love the design phase of each project. When it comes to a new project, we begin with a report and gather information about the area, council guidelines and building environment. I love that we are able to simultaneously learn new things while designing. Day-to-day project work coupled with study helps build stronger skills.

STAYING MOTIVATED

I want to be happy in my drafting career, and life in general. I would love to design high-end architectural homes and/or offices and units. As of now, I do not have any work planned for when I graduate. I am hoping to gain experience and hopefully work independently one day.

It is the greatest feeling knowing you have created a  design you never thought you would be able to pull off. It makes me feel so good inside to create work I’m proud of, to see a building and think to yourself, “Wow, I could actually have designed that myself too!” It’s a great feeling to know your skills and knowledge are up there!
